10 Best Tips for Making Law Firm Marketing Videos
These 10 simple tips will help you make a law firm marketing video off in the right direction
Law firm videos. Every firm needs one, but many don’t know what to do, and more importantly – what not to do when making one. Before hiring a video production company, or DIY’ing it, take a look at our 10 best tips for making your next law firm video.
1. Leave the stripes at home
Don’t film any situation with a stripy background or have characters wearing stripy suits. Patterns like this can be distracting so it’s best if you stick to solid colors.
2. Always use a microphone
Don’t rely on your camera’s microphone. If you’re shooting the marketing video yourself, use a “tie mic” or a “lavalier mic” which clips onto the tie or near the neckline of the shirt. If you can have a sound person, he or she should use a boom as well as a tie mic to ensure the best quality of sound is recorded.
3. Protect the law firm
Ensure your law firm marketing videos are consistent with your firm’s brand. Colors, fonts, etc should match the look and feel of your other marketing assets, such as your website. Also, help your videos stand out by embedding a watermark of your law firm’s logo in the final cut.
4. Keep the video as short as possible
Getting the point across quicker will be more effective. Videos should be only as long as they need to be. Remember that your potential prospects have the whole world at their fingertips, and if the video takes too long to get to the point or states the obvious, you will lose them.
5. Be different
Get people talking about your video and its messages. Think outside the box to increase your chances of getting your videos seen by potential clients. This video, for example, has over 600 comments on its YouTube and is a great example of being different, informative and most importantly – memorable.
6. If you are using music, ensure it complies with copyrights
If you have a certain type of music you’d like, we’d recommend online music libraries, like this.
7. If you’re using images, you must license the rights to use them
As a general rule, images that are freely available on the web are copyrighted so don’t use them. Also avoid using clipart and always try to get original images created.
8. Make sure you get the tone right
Try to be mindful of not talking down to your audience. Try to move right into the story and trust that your audience gets it. Also – consider carefully your use of “we” and “you” when referring to your law firm and your audience. There are fine lines between sounding preachy and salesy and just familiar and friendly.
9. Speak to the lens or the interviewer (not both)
On camera speakers should speak either to an interviewer just next to the lens or directly into the lens. It’s extremely difficult to speak directly into the lens without prepared/memorized material. Even very seasoned on-camera talent will look funny if they are searching for their words while they look into the camera lens. If you need this look, get an autocue teleprompter.
Otherwise, have them looking at a person just next to the lens and then do NOT look at the lens. Be aware that even small eye movements on camera appear as shifty-eyed and this is very distracting.
10. Watching the video is not the appropriate time to proof read the script
Seriously. It’s so not the time. Read your script and sign them off. In blood.
Conclusion
Law firm marketing videos can be one of the most powerful tools at your disposal to attract new clients. Be sure to follow these tips and you’ll boost your chances of having a video that does the job.
